Top 15 Books to Read for Business Success| Effective Ecommerce Podcast #39

in this episode of the effectiveecommerce podcast I got 15 books thatevery entrepreneur should read and thiswill be specifically for e-commerceentrepreneurs but most these are perfectfor any type of entrepreneur so at theend of the podcast obviously I'll listagain all 15 but you know what let'sjust jump right in with number one thelean startup so the Lean Startup book Iread it a while ago so I might forgetsome of the details but the basicprinciple the lean startup is exactlywhat I do with performance nut butterit's coming up with a product doing oneSKU just doing it as simply as possiblenow I could have even done a moreminimally Viable Product that's MVPyou'll hear people talk a lot about thisthe nvv product is like the minimalthing that would work as a product sofor performance nut butter I could havejust done it as a jar I could havemanufactured it myselfsold it in jars just to test it out Ididn't want to do that so I took thenext step and I just I did one SKU inthe little pouches the original idea Ihad in my head was to do three SKUs allof them would be in pouches it wouldhave been really complicated and itwould have caused a lot of issues itwould have split my demographics withthe idea instead with the Lean Startupis just do one thing just do it quicklyand iterate as you go so that's numberone the lean startup number two how towin friends and influence people how doyou win friends and influence people isone of the best books I've ever read itwas one of the first like self-helpstyle books I read and there's so manythings it's one of those books thatevery few years or every year or twoactually I go back to and I revisit someof the principles and a lot of them arealmost common sense but it's things thatyou probably forget in your day to daylife so one of the examples from thebook is you want to think about theother person you want to think aboutwhat they want first and this issomething I see a lot of people makingthe mistake of especially a lot ofpeople email me saying hey you shouldhelp me because it would help me makemore money and they try to get my helpand they talk about all the things howit would help them and if I had moremoney I'd have more freedom I'd you knowhere's the dealnobody cares about other people theyreally care about themselves andobviously that's not fully truebut the point is when you're trying toget someone to do something for youthink about what it is that they get outof itso a a classic example from the book isthere's this father and son and I wantedthis cow to go into the barn let's sayand they're pushing on the Kalin I'mpushing on the cow and the cow doesn'twant to move and the cows heavy enoughthat they can't move it so then the momcomes out puts a little bit of honey onher finger puts it in the cow's mouthand the cow starts eating it and sheslowly starts walking back into the barnso she led with what the cow wanted soevery time you're thinking about otherpeople when you're writing an email tosomeone else think about that what dothey want how can this be beneficial tothem there's many other principles thatuse in the book another quick one isthat you should use other people's andnames anytime you're talking to someoneanytime things like that you should tryto use their name whenever possiblepeople the people's favorite word in theEnglish language is their own name thisis why people spend millions andmillions of their own dollars to donatemoney to these universities to getsomething named after them so a person'sname is very powerful and they'reprobably a lot of other principles inthis book that I'm actually I knowthere's a lot of other principles inthis book that I'm forgetting but we got15 books to go through so I want to doit relatively quicklynumber three david-and-goliath this isMalcolm Gladwell you know what I'drecommendpretty much anything by Malcolm Gladwellall of his books are amazing but forentrepreneurs this one specificallystuck out to me and the reason is itgoes through and it talks about thestory of David and Goliath and how youknow everyone hears that story theythink wow it's such an underdog story nono it's not and Malcolm Gladwell doesthis much better job than I do but hetalks about how David you know he's thislittle boy going up against this biggiant but he didn't fight conventionallyhe didn't go up to him with a sword andsay I'm gonna beat you with a sword hefrom far away slung a rock and hit himin the head and how that's you know andit's not trying to say it's necessarilyunfair but like he played to hisstrengths and they the Giant never had achanceGoliath never had a chance in thatscenario and that's a principle thatyou're gonna want to take and put intoyour own business and we'll talk abouthow to do that in just a second I wantto finish this David and Goliath storyso David he was a shepherd in the storyand he would use thoserocks to throw them at wolves and likelions or whatever whatever was eating asheep so he was used to flinging theserocks and animals that are going prettyfast from pretty far away and then youhave the giant who in this story itmakes it sound like his vision mighteven be blurry like he's he can't seefar away on top of that he's thinkingthe Giants thinking we're gonna do thisyou know hand-to-hand hand-to-handcombat and David says no I'm not gonnafight you the way that I think you wantme to fight you there's the other thingthat really pops out in this book I'vetold this story a lot is this they tookI think every time that there was abattle where one side of one size of thearmy one army was a was ten times biggerthan the other army they took thosenumbers and they tried to figure outokay well who's gonna win so you havearmy a which let's say has a hundredthousand peoplean army B which only has ten thousandpeople statistically you're rightobviously the bigger army wins moretimes than not but if you say okay wellhow many times is the smaller army notfight can quote unquote conventionalwarfare how often do they do a guerrillawarfare tactic or an unconventionalstyle how often does the smaller armywin and it turns out 63% of time or somenumber right around there sixty majorityof the time the smaller army wins whatdoes that mean that means if the UnitedStates Army which is a superpowerobviously and ten times bigger than theCanadian Army if those two armies foughtyour money should be on the CanadianArmy if they fight unconventional that'swhat happened in Vietnam that's whathappens a lot in these likeunconventional situations and so why doI keep hammering this in you're gonnafind yourself against competitors withmore money than you you're gonna findyourself against competitors that arebigger stronger you know better than youin almost every aspect you got to thinkto yourself how do they expect me to dothis so a good example for me with let'sgo again with performance nut butter issome of my really big competitors theirstrategy is to go retail my strategy isto go direct to consumer and it's evenmore segments of MAG because some of mycompetitors also are direct to consumerbut I have strategies that they don'tknow about and I'm not about to sharethemthis podcast right this second I sharethem in my videos but I don't want tomake it too easy for any of them sothat's number three David and Goliathdon't make me think is number four sothe book don't make me think really Ican kind of summarize it but it's wortha read one hundred percent the wholepoint of a website or any kind of thisprocess but let's say specifically awebsite is to sell your product and thebest way to do that is to make it soyour customer does not have to thinkmake it as easy as possible this is whatthe GRANDMONT test is you get yourgrandma in front of the computer and seeif they can make a purchase on yourwebsite and if they can't then you'redoing something wrong in fact also watchthem how do they navigate your websitehow simple is it for them it should beeffortless it should almost be amindless activity where it's just socommon-sense and I go to some people'swebsites and I'm honestly a littleperplexed on how to navigate it so yournavigation if you have more than oneproduct you gotta be able todifferentiate between the differentproducts very easily make it a binarydecision in someone's mind let's say youhad two different products they shouldknow that if they have this set ofrequirements they get product a if theyhave this set of requirements itsproduct B and there's almost no overlapso don't make me think it talks a lotmore in detail about how to make thathappenbook number five Think and Grow Rich sothinking Grow Rich is an amazing bookit's one of those first along with howto win friends and influence people it'sone of the first books I read aboutself-help self-improvement and it's abrilliant story so Napoleon Hill Ialmost said Napoleon Dynamite NapoleonHill went around and things like theearly 1900's like 1920s maybe orsomething like that interviewed the top500 most successful people and tried tofigure out what do they have in commonand he found there was a bunch ofdifferent traits and he put him in thisbook Think and Grow Rich a bunch ofdifferent print principles one of thebiggest ones and I think I misunderstoodthis the first time I read the book butone of the biggest ones is faith more orless he keeps talking about in the bookyou have to have faith you have to havefaith and when I first thought about itI thought he meant faith as in a beliefin God or a belief in higher powerI don't think that's what I mean I thinkmaybe he means a little bit of that butI think heor so means you have faith thateverything's gonna work out and thatyou're going to be successful you haveto have like just blinding faith thatit's all gonna be okay and it's going towork out and it makes sense because whenyou 100% know deep in your core it'sgoing to work out you'll continue tolook for those opportunities even whenit feels like you're about to fail andin the book he talks about 99% of theworld's most successful people theirbiggest success came right after theirbiggest failure and this seems to be astrategy or a common theme in mostpeople's life including mine to somedegree basically I've thought about thisa lot too and in the book it makes itvery clear you're going to feel likequitting before you end up beingsuccessful like that's just how it isso no matter how optimistic you are atthis point in your entrepreneurialjourney you're gonna feel like quittingfor sure at some point so that'sthinking Grow Rich number 6 e mythrevisited so the e-myth revisited is allabout how to systematize your businessI'm gonna keep saying this all these areamazing books this is a really good bookabout making you think how to makesystems in your business that will workfor you an example of this is I use abunch of systems with my virtualassistant Ia system so it's if this happens do a ifthis other thing happens do B if allelse happens do C and these systems makeit so you don't have to be in yourbusiness constantly you can hire otherpeople to do it including virtualassistants and or just you know any kindof employee email or visited talks a lotmore in detail on how to do that and whyit's so important number seven primalbranding so it's about how to create abrand for your company how to create andthis is I followed this book a lot forperformance nut butter and one of thebig things I learned from primalbranding is you really needed to findwho your customer is but part ofdefining who your customer is isdefining who it's not and forperformance nut butter my product is fora healthy people that are interested inyou know getting healthy fats in theirdiet etc it is not for people that likecandy bars if you eat a candy bar a dayor you know okay you want a candy barlike the- your snacks don't buy my products youare the exact opposite of what I'mlooking for it goes into a ton moredetails on everything and how toeffectively create a quote-unquoteprimal brand so people will be screamingyour story from the rooftops numbereight along with this theme this is abook I'm currently reading the book isactually called building a story brandit's I think by Donald Miller I believeis the name of the guy but there's alsoa book that I'm interested I just indoing research for this video I foundcalled lead with a story probablysomewhat similar story brands reallygood the first four or five chapters orfirst half to two thirds of the book isa must read for every entrepreneur afterthat it starts being a little lessinteresting in my opinion alright Istill have six more to go we're gettingclose to someone actually my favoriteone I did say for last that's how itusually goes number nine is Jab Jab Jabright hook the whole point of this bookis social media how to properly dosocial media and the point of Jab JabJab right hook means jab is like givingcontent so you want to give good contentgive good content give good content andthen boom right hook ask for a sale askfor something and in the book you talksabout a lot of companies either only jabor only right hook and if you thinkabout with boxing if you're just jabbingall day long you're never gonna get aknockout and it once again if you thinkwith boxing if you're just constantlythrowing right hooks the guy is justgonna be dodging you constantly that'show it is with marketing – if you'reconstantly throwing right hooks you'reconstantly asking for the salepeople are gonna learn to avoid yourInstagram account your Facebook accountwhatever it is number 10 trust me I'mlying so this book is all about publicrelations PR and it's got some reallygood tips on how to go out and kind ofspark a new story like get in newspapersget in different publications you know Ithink it's it's another really good readjust to kind of get those gears in yourhead spinning a little bit on how youcan get on blogs how you can create astory that people are interested innumber 11 good – great so number 11 isgood – great and it's been a while sinceI read this book I remember when I readit I really liked a lot that's why Iincluded on thislist he goes over I believe a bunch ofdifferent businesses and talks aboutlike how they went from good companiesto great companies you know it'sactually been a little while I justremember this book really did impact mewhen I did read it so you check it out Iwill put in the show notes below I'llput a little bit more information onthat number twelve essentialism anotherbook that's very similar is the onething so essentialism was really goodbecause it talks about you know what isthe essential things that you need to bedoing like what do you act and i thinkit's a good thing just to remindyourself every once in a while like howessential is what you're doing and Ifind myself a lot most entrepreneursfind themselves a lot doing things thataren't necessary for the business infact I'd say for the averageentrepreneur eighty percent of theirtime is spent doing random junk that ifit didn't get done wouldn't reallyimpact their sales numbers that much soconsensual essentialism throws in a lotmore detail about that this is a bookthat I'll actually probably reread nowthat I'm now that I'm talking about itbut it just reminds you to do what'sessential and to figure out it gives youtips also for figuring out what isessential and what is not essentialso number thirteen the Steve Jobsbiography the Elon Musk biography allthe other biographies out there SteveJobs in Elon Musk are two of my favoritebiographies I'm adding to my list Ihaven't read it yet but I've heard suchgood things too Sam Walton from Walmartbiography the Jeff Bezos biography wasall right it wasn't that great in myopinion just for whatever reason itwasn't my favorite biography but anytimeyou can hear the story of anotherentrepreneur it inspires you and I thinkthat these people stand out but I wantto try to find more more biographiesthat aren't quite is big people if youall know actually I think the AndrewCarnegie biography I read that one aswell that was pretty good there'sthere's a lot of those out therethe Andrew Carnegie biography one of thethings that was interesting from thatwas he talks about basically at the peakof his success he was working he's meyou know he's one of the richest men inthe world and he was working four hoursa day and he said in those four hoursyou got more done than most people do ina week and I I think about that a lotwhen I feel like I'm working hard butnot really moving a lot I think abouthowJew Carnegie would only work for hoursand that is one of my goals and actuallyin the next few weeks I'm gonna I'mgonna start doing that working for hoursin the morning and then taking the restof the day you know to read if I want toread like do whatever I want to do andthe truth is I enjoy working and I enjoyreading new books and that is work butit's a little bit of a rant I've got twomore books before we wrap this up booknumber fourteen launch and launch is andI keep saying this it's an amazing bookit's this one specifically is for emailmarketing no I mean part of its reallyhelpful for email marketing but it tellsyou how to launch a product and I thinkthis is something that I really learneda lot from in fact launching performancenot butter I use this anytime I launch acourse for effective e-commerce I usemore or less the launch strategy I'mgonna continue to use this I have a newcourse I'm in the process of working onright nowand I'm gonna use the launch strategyeven more so for that so it talks a lotabout email marketing it talks about theI think it's the horizontal sales letterso if you remember in the old days therewas the vertical sales letter where youhad to scroll down a page and it wouldjust try to sell you on some kind ofproduct he talks about the horizontalsales letter were you over the course oflet's say 10 days you sent four or fivedifferent emails with videos and insteadof it being one long page it happensover the course of many days and it's avery effective strategy for making moneynumber 15last but not least we have the 4-hourworkweek and this is a classic it'salmost overplayed this is the book thatreally put into words everything I wasthinking about wanting to quit mycorporate job wanting to start my ownonline company wanting to be able totravel the world and just live thatbeautiful lifestyle that we've allwanted to do since we were kids and itgives a lot of strategies too on how toactually do that how to be moreproductivetalks about the 8020 principle thePareto principle also known as and it'sbasically 20 percent or so if you takeyou know what you do in a day forinstance or what you do over the courseof a year 20 percent of what you do overthe course of a year will really lead to80 percent of the results and this istrue for most things so I look at what Idid last year20of what I did led to more than 80percent of my income that 20 percentBing launching performance nut butter Ispent very little time on that and itmade most my money then second place forme was effective e-commerce I didn'tspend a lot of time on effectivee-commerce and it made a lot of moneythat's why I'm starting to take it ate alot more seriously the other thing ittalks about is batching so you shouldonly check your email once a day which Ido in fact effective e-commerce emailsI'm only checking them once a week nowon Wednesdays because nothing thathappens with effective e-commerce isthat urgent so I'm not super worriedabout it performance nut butter and myother businesses I need to check emailsI don't need to but I check them once aday just for peace of mind so that isall 15 books let's read them one moretime the Lean Startup how to win friendsand influence people David and Goliathdon't make me think Think and Grow Richemeth revisited primal branding storybrand Jab Jab Jab right hooktrust me online good to greatessentialism the Steve Jobs Elon Muskall those cool people biographies thebook launch and then finally the 4-hourworkweek there are links down below toall these books if you're listening tothe podcast go to effective you gotcommerce calm use the links thereaffiliate links and I get a smallkickback so I'm always appreciative ofthat if you enjoyed this video I have avideo right here that you will reallylike go ahead and click on that videoI'm sure you will enjoy it
